Engaging students in solving complex environmental problems
Courses I teach:
Environmental Science for Informed Citizens (GESC 43)
Are you interested in how what you eat for breakfast can impact the climate system? Have you ever wondered how you could use geothermal energy to heat and cool your house? Join me for a deep dive into how your every day decisions (& those that you make at the ballot box) impact our planet!
Introduction to Sustainability
(GESC 44 / SUST 44)
We will investigate approaches to creating a sustainable future that foster environmental resilience, social equity, and economic stability. In other words, we will explore what we can do to ensure everyone thrives – both now and in the future! This course will focus on developing the critical thinking and communication skills needed to make sustainable decisions for a healthy future.
Introduction to GIS and Spatial Analysis
(GESC 102)
A geographic information system (GIS) provides a framework for analyzing geographically referenced (ie., spatial) data. Because GIS techniques allow one to spatially represent both social and environmental data, GIS has become an important tool across a variety of fields including planning, engineering, public health, sustainability, business, and more. In this class you will learn to use GIS as tool for telling the stories of “place”.
Earth’s Changing Climate (GESC 103)
Join us for an interdisciplinary exploration of the geologic and instrumental records of climate change, anthropogenic disruption of the climate system, and possible adaptation and mitigation strategies reduce the impacts of climate change, especially on historically marginalized groups. You will also develop your science communication skills so that you’re prepared to credibly and clearly discuss complex issues with wide range of people.
Critical Zone Science
(GESC 148)
Curious about what the “Critical Zone” is? Check out this video from WSKG Public Media to learn more what this class is all about and how the Critical Zone helps sustain life on Earth! Click here.
